Full Media Read Scan

Purpose

Full Media Read Scan reads the complete addressable logical range after sanitization to identify regions that cannot be read successfully through the active controller path.

The scan is read-only.

Expected duration

The scan requires approximately one complete logical read of the device. A 1 TB device at an average sustained 100 MB/s requires several hours before overhead and slow or failed reads are considered.

What the scan establishes

A successful scan provides evidence that all addressable logical blocks could be read through the current device and controller path during the test.

It does not prove:

  • That every future read will succeed;
  • That every block can be written reliably;
  • That hidden or retired physical media is healthy;
  • That controller caches or redundancy paths will behave identically later;
  • That the device is suitable for every workload.

Handling errors

When bad blocks are reported:

  1. Preserve the detailed offsets and SMART data;
  2. Compare the result with pre-erasure health information;
  3. Do not assign the device to a critical workload based only on a passing erasure;
  4. Apply the organization’s reuse, quarantine, warranty, or destruction criteria.
