Save and Reuse CertErase Target Lists

Applies to: All editions

Purpose

A saved target list records file and folder paths for later reuse. It supports repeatable workflows, but it is not a snapshot of file content and does not freeze the meaning of a path.

Save a list

  1. Build and review the file list.
  2. Select File > Save As to save the file list.
  3. Choose an approved location.
  4. Save the list using the .lst format.
  5. Protect the list according to the sensitivity of the paths it contains.

Folder entries are represented with a folder marker followed by the path. File entries are stored as paths. The list does not embed the selected data, hashes, authorizations, retention decisions, or erasure settings.

Open a list

  1. Open CertErase.
  2. Select File > Open to open a saved file list.
  3. Choose the approved .lst file.
  4. Review every resolved file and folder path.
  5. Remove stale or unauthorized entries.
  6. Confirm the current erasure settings separately.

CertErase checks whether the selected file resembles a supported list, but format validation does not prove that its targets are current, safe, or authorized.

Revalidation requirements

Revalidate a list whenever:

  • A drive letter, mapped drive, mount point, or share has changed;
  • A user profile has been recreated;
  • A folder is reused for a different project or customer;
  • Files can be replaced at the same path;
  • The list was received from another person or system;
  • The list crosses a trust boundary;
  • The operation is subject to a legal hold or retention schedule.

A target list should be treated as executable operational input. Store it in a controlled location, restrict modification, and consider retaining an approved copy with the final report.

Recommended governance

For recurring enterprise workflows, pair the .lst file with a separate procedure that records:

  • Purpose and authorization;
  • Data owner;
  • Applicable retention decision;
  • Approved edition and profile;
  • Required verification;
  • Report type;
  • Reviewer or witness;
  • Handling of failures.
