Extended Media Validation combines:
- Device identity and initial SMART information;
- A SMART Extended Self-Test;
- A complete read of the addressable logical range;
- Bad and slow region analysis;
- Sequential throughput and latency analysis;
- A final SMART snapshot;
- An overall health score and grade.
Use it when a long built-in diagnostic and complete read-based examination are required before redeployment.
Full Health Assessment
Full Health Assessment is the most comprehensive combined post-erasure option. It brings together available extended SMART diagnostics, complete surface reading, sampled write verification, and representative read benchmarking.
It is intended for high-confidence reuse grading and can require a substantial maintenance window.
Duration planning
The total duration depends on:
- Extended self-test time reported or controlled by the drive;
- Complete logical capacity;
- Sustained read speed;
- Error recovery and slow regions;
- Sampled write and readback time;
- Controller and bridge performance.
Plan for several hours on large HDDs. Avoid starting the assessment where a shutdown, maintenance deadline, or power interruption is likely.
Result separation
The combined health result does not replace the sanitization result. Reports retain separate evidence for:
- Pre-erasure health;
- Erasure and verification;
- Post-erasure diagnostics;
- Overall health score and grade.
Reuse decision
A strong combined result can support an organizational decision to reuse the device. The organization remains responsible for defining acceptance thresholds, expected service life, workload suitability, warranty requirements, and circumstances requiring quarantine or destruction.
